Teacher Evaluation
My school
has our own evaluation system. The most common one is that each teacher will be
observed by all teachers in the school.
Before this
observation, the teacher needs to have a discussion with the leader of his/her
grade to decide what content is going to be taught for the observation. After
that, this teacher will prepare the lesson plan. Then the teacher will have a
pre-observation discussion with the grade leader about the lesson plan. This
part will focus on teaching objectives. After this the teacher will have the
first class observed by teachers who teach the same grade with him/her. Once
completed, the teacher will get feedback from those teachers and make some
changes to the lesson plan if necessary. When these steps are finished, the
teacher will have the official observation by all teachers from the school. After
this observation, the leader of this subject will arrange a meeting with all
teachers, then give the final feedback to the teacher.
I think this
approach is very helpful for a teacher’s development, especially for a new
teacher. It’s a really good way to help teachers realize where they are and
where to go.
The second
approach to teacher evaluation is called Open Door with the Principal. The
principal will come to observe the class without telling anyone ahead of time.
It means that the principal will show up in the class at any time. After that,
you will get your feedback from the principal or the secretary. It means
teachers need to prepare each class well and make sure your class goes as
smooth as possible every day.
As a
teacher, I think the most important thing is the class. To judge whether a
teacher is a good or not, the elements should include, a lesson plan, teaching
strategy, skills and responsibility. I think a good teacher always spends more
time in preparing than teaching. Because when you do the lesson planning, you
can always get some new ideas to adapt to different students. As well as this,
you should always have a plan B in case an unexpected situation happens in your
class. Every time when you do lesson planning, it’s a self-reflection as well.
You can avoid the same mistakes you made from last time. When you have a good
lesson plan, a good teaching strategy is the key part. It includes instruction
language, activities, etc. A good teacher is not only lectures students, but
gets all students involved in the class. In my opinion, students should talk
more than the teacher. In order to realize this, teachers need to be skillful
and knowledgeable. The teacher should know how to lead students to the
direction of the objectives. During this part, the teacher knows how to give
some help if necessary. Last but not least, responsibility is the basic duty of
a teacher. Because you have the trust from the students, students’ parents, and
the school. The sense of responsibility is the key for a teacher’s success.
