Understanding and applying standards

I was able to get a great deal of insight through use of unpacking the standards. I view it as the big picture for your class and as educators it is our role to help bring this down to manageable proportions in the classroom. The use of the standards helped to appreciated the expectation we should have in our lessons with students. It is similar with the idea of; 'Failing to plan is planning to fail'. It helped me to understand the need to set out realistic goals for each component and to better use activities that would help the students in my class. The idea of backwards mapping was something new for me to look at in my planning. We start out looking at where we want to be from the very beginning. That we can look at the outcome from the outset is something that can only better prepare a teacher to see the goal through. I am teaching English in Grade 2 of a primary school. I am going to choose Common Core State Standards. Here is the one I will use to develop the unit lesson plan:           Tell a story or recount an experience with appropriate facts and relevant, descriptive details, speaking audibly in coherent sentences. As non-native speakers, my students are starters of English learning. Speaking and listening skills are the priority at this stage. Once they find they can use what they have learned to communicate with others, their confidence and interest can be built up easily.  The topic of this unit 5 is about holidays. Applying classroom rules and procedures

Introduction: Teachers always expect students to follow the rules and procedures in the classrooms. When students do a good job at following the rules, they should be given positive reinforcement; when they do not follow the rules and procedures, they should acknowledge their behavior with negative and positive consequences.   (a) Positive reinforcement to students who are following the rules and   procedures  Students always need positive reinforcement from teachers and parents when they are following the rules and procedures. I always give immediate positive reinforcement when they are following the rules and procedures, especially when other kids are not. I am teaching Grade Two in a primary school at the moment.
